Let’s have a look at the following Verses from the Quran along with a saying of the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him.
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى, the Exalted said:
Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Surah An-Nur 24:22
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى said:
Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant. Surah Al-A’raf 7:199
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him said:
Be merciful to others and you will receive mercy. Forgive others and Allah will forgive you. Source: Musnad Ahmad 7001, Grade: Sahih
In the Quran, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى emphasizes a couple of times to forgive others. Not only forgive but have mercy upon His people. When we wish something for us from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى , we expect mercy from Him, yet we are not equally merciful towards other people. In order to be forgiven, we must learn to forgive and forget. For example, consider the first verse above questioning our sole existence whether we would like to be forgiven. The other part of the verse also reiterates to forgive others whether it is our close relationships or not.
We, as humans, tend to hold on to grudges for the rest of our lives over minor issues. This leads to a lack of peace and humbleness in our personalities. As a result, we lose our sincere connection with our Creator سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى and the furthest we go, the less chances of forgiveness.
Take a moment to consider the above verses and the noble words of Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him. Look back in to our lives and think about whether grudges are still holding on to our soul and mind. If we have hurt someone, apologize to them & pray sincerely for that person’s betterment. There is nothing better a believing man and woman can do for their fellow brothers and sisters than a prayer.
May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى guide us aright and grant us the capacity to forgive, forget and build patience towards His people as He سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى has been patient with us.
