I know its quite late to be posting this now since Ramadan is coming to an end. However, the other side of it says that if we did any of the following, we still have time to ask for forgiveness from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى.
“So now have sexual relations with them and seek that which Allaah has ordained for you (offspring), and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your Sawm (fast) till the nightfall” [al-Baqarah 2:187]
Sometimes, we end up taking a sip of water or while cooking, licking our finger as we would normally. However, because they are done unintentionally, our fast does NOT break. Also, medical examinations that do not include giving energy to the body are not permissible during fasting. Therefore, we can ask for forgiveness and continue with our fast until the time of sunset for that day.
So, what are the things that truly break our fast? Consider the following list:
2- Vomiting deliberately
3- Eating and drinking intentionally
4- Anything that is regarded as coming under the same heading as eating and drinking
5- Letting blood by means of cupping and the similar
7- Menstruation and nifaas
The main purposes of fasting are to gain control over desires, understand the situation of the poor without food and water, gain piety and righteousness. If, in any case, we continue satisfied our needs while fasting, it will defeat the purpose of the entire concept.
On the other hand, drawing blood or inserting anything providing energy to the body such as glucose & injections also invalidates a person’s fast. So, in the case when we intentionally or unintentionally break or invalidate our fast, we must make it up after Eid and first 6 days of Shawaal (month after Ramadan). In the case a woman comes across her period while fasting, her fast is automatically invalidated and must be made up afterwards.
What if a person break their fast intentionally? Let’s talk about that in the next post. Till then, sleep on this.
